We do. There’s conflicting info amongst non car types, they can’t decide what’s better, RWD or FWD but it doesn’t matter as long as you are careful. I’ve not experienced snow since I’ve owned an auto but never had any trouble with getting stuck in the snow with a manual. Momentum is key.

AWD gives you confidence. Confidence is bad. Be certain that if I have a kid one day, he’ll be forced to drive a RWD with a LSD in the snow/ice. That way he won’t go fast and I promise you he’ll be aware of his surroundings :)

RWD in the snow/ice FTW. Nothing more fun and nothing forces you to pay attention anymore than one.

I’m going to go down the middle here and say 4wd. You can’t run it on a high traction surface, so you stay RWD until the roads are completely covered, and then you change to 4wd to stay absolutely planted. You still have to learn how to drive RWD in the snow which gives you a respect for the snow, but you do have a backup plan.

This is of course assuming you have snow tires. Always have snow tires.

Interesting fact I realized this year, my total FWD+snow driving experience is 5 minutes in a snowy parking lot. Everything else is RWD/4WD (mostly RWD). I regret nothing.

I’ve been in a situation similar to this, but I thankfully didn’t hit anything. It’s terrifying once you realize you have zero control over the car.

This video makes me wonder how our future autonomous cars will handle snow and ice. I mean, humans obviously don't handle it that well as the video shows. I'm just wondering what a computer controlled car will do once it detects a slide and such.

Winter tires give you traction. Traction helps with acceleration, handling and braking.

AWD allows more power to be dispersed via more wheels. It does not help with handling or braking. It only allows you to reach an unsafe speed more quickly.

Some people might disagree with your assertion that AWD doesn’t help with handling.

If you have the car control of a scandanavian rally driver, with a proper torque vectoring rally car this rule does not apply. If you are within the remaining 99.9995% of the population I stand by my statement.

No torque vectoring on those. LSD’s are OK, torque vectoring went away quite a while ago.
